Coming within the next month - we'll be updating PinBall Breaker Deluxe with the redesigned Sammy. Everyone hated the old look so we decided to change things up.

UAH Charger Con - April 6th

KageKMB from CubePunks is going to be there. Limited stock of the Greedy Goblins comic is going to be for sale.

On the off chance anybody from NG is going - DM us and we'll reserve a copy for you. First DM gets a free copy.

KageKMB writing (as usual for the blog) doing a rundown of a few things:

After I drop this - AFK for a bit on the blog.

Future Plans:

Project: Bit Beak

Our next game is a bigger one. Having on and off development for over a year now; and the most recent build last worked on December - it's about time we hunkered down and got this one out of the door. It's an action platformer starring the Jerry character (featured in Pinball Breaker Deluxe) inspired by the art we saw in the Miami graffiti district.

Bulk of the engine is done; it's a matter of making a ton of polished assets, design good levels, and code boss fights. Safe to say, it's gonna take more than a month. Scope is going to be 4 worlds: 2 levels and 1 boss each.

Project: Crimson Blade

iu_1180231_5504493.png

I've had one game I've really wanted to make for years now, every other project prior is a stepping stone to get my skill level in multiple departments done so I was competent enough to see though my vision. From getting better at coding, drawing in my sketchbook, trying to learn better modeling, producing music, to making browser games to learn what does and doesn't work in game design - what you've been seeing me do on NG is leading up to this. I'm not going to say it's going to be my Magnum Opus - but it will be my decade defining work (I'm 26 atm btw).

Bit Beak is really that last stepping stone before Crimson Blade; so once it's completed I'm gonna start solidifying my design doc drafts and working on a vertical slice of the game. Said vertical slice will be adapted into a browser game; and once that's completed, I'll look into the options on how to get a full indie title for it completed.

Charger Con

UAH has a convention Iis plan on showcasing CubePunks games at. On the off chance that anyone from NG is going, DM me.

Behind the Scenes + Sketch Book

iu_1180232_5504493.png

We historically haven't been the best at behind the scenes posts - it wasn't until full embracement of the blog/news tool we have been documenting things regularly. However; we plan making art posts that are a form of behind the scenes galleries. From mockups, early stage test renders, pre-inked artwork ETC.

General sketch book scans will also be uploaded - being trickled as posts on our Twitter and periodic compilations here on NG (going with what complements each platform). Speaking for myself, I have loads upon loads of sketchbook art but since I don't care much for inking and coloring I share very little online. But the internet thrives on persistent engagement and I have consistent fodder so it's kinda illogical I don't use what I have.

Video / Live Content

We've experimented in the past with video talking about our games; problem with that is that the hours spent making the video could be hours spent making something new. We've also experimented with game dev streams but they were a tad dry for the general viewer.

Given these next two are bigger project and are going to require periodic breaks to prevent burnout - Behind the scenes related YouTube videos may return. As for streaming - after some equipment comes in the mail there will be some experimentation with paper sketching streams (video content + twitter post fodder + upkeep on a skill + art that could be inked for a game = overall win).

Q1 Recap:

We've already released 2 games this years; same amount as the entirety of 2023. Both got front paged (thank you NG). Pinball Breaker Deluxe is our top rated, 2nd most played and first game to get monthly best. Space Girls is a new release but also a long time coming (it was a revival of a scrapped game); and I lost 11lbs during the making of the game.

We also started dropping our soundtracks on NewGrounds - doing them bi-weekly cause we found regular uploads were kinda spammy lol.

Listen to More

We also have made sure the RedBubble store has been up to date with designs based off every CubePunks game. We've also been tinkering around with 3D print files however nothing is in the state to be sold. (At our current size; print files are the best option - but we want a bit more practice to feel confident before distributing the files)

Thank you site staff!

Backstory on this one, the game was actually written with half the assets done years ago. This was before KageKMB started any form of coding and CubePunks became a game dev thing. Kai-el-Jefe (writer and artist) was going to do this as a Ren'Py project over Covid (which influenced the plot) but the project ended up sizzling out. Years later, wanting to test out the Dialogic Godot plugin, reviving Space Girls felt like the perfect fit + saved time that'd otherwise be wasted.

The soundtrack for the game will be releasing soon on Newgrounds (same manner we've been dropping our other tracks, once or twice a week). One is currently available, released as a preview for the game when it got delayed a week.

Trailer post on Twitter

Game has a trailer, as well as a new version pushed that adjusted a few minor visual errors. The game will be rolling out with a few patches tweaking things in that regard, as well as also hopefully minimizing the load time.

From my experience running Godot3 HTML5 exports, for mobile Newgrounds loads faster but for desktop it's Itch.io. I'm not smart enough to tell you why, this is just observation from my experience. End of the day your best option is just making files smallest as possible regardless of platform, and by nature of this game's genera being high rez asset heavy, easier said than done.

We made it on the list.

As an aside:

The supporter ability to make front paged blog post is missing for our account, did rules change or is it a bug?

I've been working on a demo Kiosk for Charger Con, a clip of it was posted on HSVgamedevs. Video also features a snippet of me yapping about the leaderboard tool I use. Link Here

General plan BTW is after "Project Break Beak" is to port the majority of the existing browser titles, around 6, into a compilation. Having projects on conventional storefronts is good for resumé but I don't want to pay fees per game lol. This Kiosk is using an early build of that project.

Pinball Breaker Deluxe's gameplay assets look less pixelated here because I can use a better render engine for a download game than a HTML5 game. Ideally, the compilation will include more minor presentational enhancements along those lines.

Said compilation title has yet to be priced and will ideally release late this year.

Here's one of the tracks that's going to be in the visual novel. It is planned to release now on the 22nd.

The Bad:

Our next game, Space Girls Can't Swim, has been delayed a week. There are just one too many adjustments that couldn't have been fit in our schedule this week (we want to work towards CubePunks being our full time work, but

we're not there yet).

The Good:

CubePunks is planning on having a showcase at UAH's Charger Con in April. Currently working on our demo kiosk - Amazon fire in a LEGO shell with an 8bitdo Neo Geo gamepad - with a custom launcher and the games running natively as an APK. iu_1175335_5504493.webp
